We cater for all home & personal computer users with dependable & fast laptop & desktop solutions at every price point between $549 & $10,000.
With over 20 years of first-hand experience and education in the IT industry, leave it to us to accurately troubleshoot problems with your PC.
If your existing PC is less than 6 years old but running slow, it could simply need a fresh Windows 10 install or some simple hardware upgrades.
In the main, there are two ways to run your computer systems - you either wait for something to go bang or you try to prevent this in the first place!
With combined industry experience of over 70 years our techs leave no stone unturned when your computer's security has been compromised.
The loss of personal or business data can easily be one of the most tragic experiences that you can ever face in the world of computing.
If you create documents, databases or pictures that have any individual worth to you, then you need a simple backup solution to protect them.
For many computer users, when it comes time to replace a computer, the purchase of a replacement machine is just the start of the process.
Regardless of how fast your NBN connection is – if your Wi-Fi signal is weak where you need it most then you still can’t browse effectively.
Accidental drops, liquid ingress, PCB burnout – many of these disasters can be covered under your existing home & contents insurance.
Solid State Drives (SSD’s) are currently taking the PC marked by storm. They have always had huge performance and reliability advantages they offer over standard mechanical drives – often performing 10 times quicker while also being 10 times more reliable. Now thanks to massive price drops, everyone in the market for a new PC should be using a SSD in their new desktop or laptop. We are now offering these across the board in all our PC solutions. We have several main sales lines. Firstly, for the enthusiast computer user and to cater for home users wanting quality, we sell our own Kerr Solutions Premium Workstations which are custom built inhouse in our own service centre here in Rockhampton. This gives us the ability to supply gamers, photographers, movie makers, IT enthusiasts and industry professionals with unprecedented scope for power, capacity and expandability. We can fine tune a Kerr Solutions Premium Workstation to either a budget or to a specified performance level. Our own Workstations have been one of our trademark industry solutions which have built up an enviable reputation for performance and longevity with customers. Many of these computers have given 5 to 8 years of service and have been upgraded to newer operating systems over time without any hardware changes.
Secondly for home & personal users that are happy with a more standard PC, we are keen to offer Hewlett Packard’s commercial range of ultra-small desktops, standard desktops, All-In-One desktops and their extensive range of laptop PC’s. We can also customise these by offering larger SSD’s in models that only ship with small SSD’s and by offering more ram at the same time. For instance, we have not sold a laptop with less than 8GB of ram for well over 8 years now – when you can still find heaps of new models today in chain stores with only 4GB of ram. Minor changes like this can mean the difference between buying a useful PC or just a frustrating piece of junk. The HP commercial range are built up to a standard instead of down to a budget also come standard with 2nd business day onsite parts & labour warranties.
Thirdly for budget minded users that still want a fast and dependable solution we are now combining the speed of a brand new SSD with Windows 10 features and the power and value of a factory refurbished corporate computer. For this we have carefully selected Intel i5 & i7 models that offer 2 or 3 times the power of a typical new budget PC at around half the cost! These PC’s offer such remarkable value for money, power and reliability that we even bundle them standard with a 13-month parts and labour warranty for your peace of mind. We often call these our Eco IT solutions as when selecting one of these, you are also being kind to the environment. If you simply need quick Internet access, email ability and some standard applications like Word & Excel then there is nothing extra to be gained by spending 2, 3 or 4 times as much on a more powerful PC.
With any of the above solutions the biggest advantage we have over other retailers is the level of our IT expertise and the resulting setup of each and every PC. Before any PC leaves our shop, we have gone to great lengths to configure Windows 10 for both simplicity and speed of operation. All junk and trial software has been removed and all annoying pop-up configuration messages have been dealt with. Every PC has been patched and updated with the latest Windows updates as well as the latest drivers and essential programs such as Adobe Acrobat Reader, Flash Player, Java, Google Chrome and the latest Codecs. Your PC will be ready to use from the moment that you turn it on.
We can also offer a complete data transfer service to get ALL of your important information, software and settings across from your previous PC. These value-added services that have been fine-tuned and honed over our last 20 plus years of being at the forefront of the IT industry. There is no way we could offer these professional IT services while trying to sell you fridges, microwaves and vacuum cleaners from the same business.
With all the IT hardware that we sell, we go to a lot of trouble to make sure that we are recommending and selling devices that work. There are many brands and products that we simply will not stock because they don’t perform. This is another difference that separates us from a chain store – it is our reputation at stake. We stock specific brands of Computer Screens, Internet Routers, Wireless Access Points, External Hard Drives, Network Cameras, Network Switches, Wi-Fi Adaptors, USB-to-Serial Adaptors, USB Hubs, NAS devices, Display Adaptors, Keyboards & Mice.
When you’re not well you turn to an industry professional – a Doctor. So why take chances with the health of your PC? Everyone I talk to knows someone who knows someone who is an IT expert! The fact of the matter is that our industry is so specialised and fast moving, that unless you are a full time IT tech then you are nowhere even close to being an industry professional. We are regularly called upon to fix problems after the friend of a friend has already done his best to fix it – and often this was when the real damage was done. Read more...
We don’t poke and prod and hope for the best, but rather we head down a logical and known path to provide proper and long-lasting repairs. If a computer is not economical to fix we will tell you before we spend hours of time and hundreds of your dollars heading in the wrong direction. We service and repair all makes and models of servers, workstations and laptops with a fast turnaround to sort out the bugs and get your computer back under your control. If replacement is going to be more economical than repair and if this is your situation we will not sugar coat what is going wrong and what is needed.
The ‘brain’ of a computer is the Central Processing Unit (or CPU) and every CPU has a power rating (benchmark) by which to compare it to others – just like a car engine has a Kilowatt or horsepower rating! Normally the more you pay for a PC, the higher this benchmark is and the more speedily it will operate. If you have a midrange computer that is 2 to 6 years old – and especially if it has an Intel CPU of the model name i3, i5 or i7 then it can run Windows 10 efficiently and fast. We are now selling the 8th Generation of these iconic Intel models however even the 2nd and 3rd Generation Intel’s and all models since, still have plenty of power. These CPU’s do not slow down or become weak with use – but rather they operate at the same speed they did when new, normally until something else in your computer breaks.Read more...
There have always been a lot of underpowered junk PC’s available from chain stores and this is still the case now. So, all too often we see customers that have replaced an older powerful PC with a brand-new budget PC which is of far lesser power. Don’t let this happen to you! Either come in and see us or do the homework yourself. You can find your particular CPU model number by looking under the ‘System Information’ section in your PC and then find it’s individual benchmark rating online at www.cpubenchmark.net or just Google (for example) ‘Intel i5-4690S benchmark’ to find your CPU rating (approx. 7,421 in this example). You can then compare this directly to a CPU rating from a PC that you are considering purchasing. In the above example a CPU with a benchmark of approx. 3,700 will literally have half the power – while a CPU with a benchmark of 15,000 will have double the procession power!
No article about PC upgrades would be complete without reference to both PC memory (RAM) and Solid-State Drive’s (SSD’s). These components also have a bearing on computer speed and efficiency. During the 2018 year, SSD prices have now dropped to a point where they have become an affordable and best alternative for every PC. In fact, if you replace the HDD in your computer with a SSD and do nothing else, you will see at least a doubling of its apparent performance. Adding extra computer system memory (RAM) is also a cheap and effective way to speed up and existing PC – particularly if you currently have less than 8GB of RAM. A computer with only 2GB will be slow to the point of not being useable and 4GB is still on the skinny side to efficiently run Windows 10. Conversely going beyond 8GB of ram in the average PC will rarely yield any appreciable advantage and can equate to throwing money away.
My current suggested PC specifications for the average user to aim for (and to run Windows 10 quite nicely) would be a CPU with a benchmark of at least 4,000 teamed with 8GB of RAM and a 250GB (or larger) SSD. You will only need a larger SSD than 250GB if you are wanting to store 10’s of thousands of photos, or a similar number of songs, or hundreds of high quality movies. SSD’s are currently also available in 500GB, 1TB, 2TB and 4TB sizes.
Windows 7 & 8 Note – if you are currently running Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 we can professionally upgrade you to Windows 10 without any further licensing costs. Again – come in and see us about this upgrade because regardless of anything that you’ve heard, Windows 10 when installed and configured correctly is far better than any previous version of Windows – and just as easy to use!
If you’re waiting for something to break, do you know how loud the next ‘bang’ will be? Because if you are not maintaining your IT systems then it is certain that some sort of ‘bang’ is heading your way. We have seen customers operate in either of these modes and it is difficult to say that either way works out costlier from an IT perspective. However, it has been easy to see that waiting for a ‘bang’ costs way more in lost productivity and other financial losses – especially when “Murphy’s Law” dictates that any ‘bang’ will come at the most inappropriate & costly time. If you are keeping a comprehensive and regular backup of all your files (documents, photos, emails, movies, music, Internet favourites, contacts etc) and you have a spare PC that is operating fine and is ready to roll, then maybe you can neglect servicing and maintenance to some degree. As long as you’re not leaving yourself open to hacking, identity theft, banking fraud, viruses and a host of Internet related problems normally associated with a lack of PC maintenance. These are the areas that we operate in all day, every day – safeguarding customers from untimely PC outages and protecting them from the multitude of Internet related threats.
Don’t put your PC’s health and your own financial health at risk – get your PC setup correctly right from the start to guard against problems. You purchased it from somewhere else? We don’t mind – if it is running Windows 7, 8, 8.1 or 10 we can configure it no different to one of our own PC’s. We currently look after thousands of private PC’s that don’t experience any downtime and keep their users safe on the Internet – shouldn’t you be amongst this list?
We have the latest industry tools for removing virus and malware infections as well as sniffing out any hacker exploits and remote monitoring software. If you have fallen victim of a phone scam, then the sooner you can get your computer to us or the sooner we can visit your network the better. We often work in with our customers’ banks and building societies to plug holes and provide settings and software for a trouble-free future. Read more...
Viruses and Malware aren’t the only things that will reduce your computers performance – too much software will have an adverse effect as well. Most of today’s computers are so choked up with both junk and trial software that only half of their ram and CPU resources are spare for the applications that you need to run. At Kerr Solutions we know what can be uninstalled and how to do this safely and effectively to ‘turbocharge’ your laptop or desktop. At the same time, we get rid of all of those annoying pop-ups that either want you to update something useless or pay for something that you don’t actually need.
Unfortunately, we see an average of one customer a week that has experienced some sort of potential or catastrophic data loss and in all cases, it was preventable with the right advice and solution. When this disaster strikes we have experienced technicians with expert data recovery software and a modern IT service centre to effectively deal with over 90% of data recovery circumstances. If a more specialised recovery is needed such as a particle free environment, replacement spindle motors & bearings, replacement seek heads or replacement circuit boards we have a recovery partner that specialises in this field with remarkable success. If you experience a failing hard drive or discover important files missing the most important thing at this point is to stop doing anything yourself. At this point the PC or drive needs to go to an industry expert, where it is often a simple case of using the right procedures & techniques to recover 100% of your files. It is when a customer tries to run file checkers and check disk utilities that things most often go from bad to worse. At the extreme we have seen ‘backyard experts’ try to help by opening the lids on hard drive enclosures to inspect the internals. There is not one thing that anyone in all Central Queensland can do by opening up a hard drive – this is a job for white gown, clean room specialists in Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne and any local attempt to fiddle in this area simply contaminates the drive and further destroys any remaining data.
If a hard drive is failing, simply turn it off and get it to us when you can. While they are turned off, hard drives are not incurring any further damage or data degradation – so this is the most vital step that a customer can do!
Home & personal computer users struggle with what needs backing up, how this can be done and how often it should happen. There is little wonder that this is the case, as the IT market has thousands of different solutions for this purpose, however some of them are entirely unpractical and others are downright confusing or simply don’t work. We hear from many customers that struggle with the backup concept itself and are not sure what this is all about. The IT term ‘backup’ actually means to make a copy of the original file for safekeeping – while still keeping the original file intact. What this normally translates to is keeping the original file on your PC while you create another electronic copy ‘backup’ onto a separate disk or other file storage medium. Read more...
If you are on a good NBN connection, then you can also consider keeping a ‘cloud’ based copy – however this still needs to be initially setup by someone that knows computers well. The simplest backup system is one that we pioneered 18 years ago when we programmed our own logical backup software to suit home users and small business. Our system costs $120 for the software and uses any one of the multitude of external backup drives available today. We suggest that the user keeps this backup drive separate to the PC (in case of theft or a particularly bad virus) in a bedroom drawer for example – and then once a week or once a month (depending on computer usage) they plug this drive in to the computer and double click a single desktop icon that we setup. Within the next 10-15 seconds they see our backup software finish on their screen and all that is left to do is to unplug the drive and place it back in the bedroom drawer for safe keeping.
The system above has then automatically ‘synchronised’ a backup copy of anything important that is new or changed on the PC across to the external drive (you now have an up-to-date backup copy of everything that is important to you). This system is designed to never delete any information from the external drive so that an important file can be easily recovered even if it were deleted from the PC six months prior. This is an intelligent but simple backup solution which anyone can use, which is also quick, convenient, user verifiable and even user recoverable if you need it. For a small monetary investment this is by far the best system our industry offers.
Whether purchasing a new PC or reinstalling and existing one, in nearly all cases there is a significant amount of software to install and data to transfer. The software can include the likes of Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat and Flash Player, Java, Anti-virus software, Backup Software, Printer / Scanner Software, Family Tree Makers, Email Software – the list goes on. Our techs are doing this type of work all day / every day, so it becomes second nature and as you can imagine we discover many helpful tips and tricks along the way. Every step we take is planned and calculated, often resulting in us completing in just 2 hours what would sometimes take the average user 2 days. If done professionally we can also guarantee that you don’t end up with extra software that is not needed, and which would otherwise slow your PC and further complicate its use. Read more...
When it comes to the customers actual data, again there are many files (some of them hidden) to consider as part of a complete data transfer. Besides transferring the normal documents, spreadsheets, photos, music and movies there are extra items including emails (sent and received), address books, Internet Favourites and customised dictionaries! If you are putting up with an old slow PC because you are dreading the task of getting all your important information across to a new one – you need to see us.
The home routers that most NBN service providers supply can be particularly weak as far as Wi-Fi strength and penetration is concerned. Many of these devices can provide signal to just one or two rooms leaving lots of ‘dead spots’ throughout a standard house. If you have a large house, then Wi-Fi signal can be non-existent in the rooms furthest away from the router. There are a range of ‘home user’ devices such as range extenders that are designed to help in these situations however the effectiveness of these devices is dubious at best. Problems of this kind show up as very-slow to zero Internet connection speeds from many parts of the house and it even this can vary with the time of the day and who else is home. Read more...
We have a range of high output, extended range Wireless Access Points that can blanket an entire large house with perfect Wi-Fi to every room – from one single device. This device does not rely on range extenders or any other form of trickery – they simply work and continue to work month after month. We normally supply these ‘pre-programmed’ and get customers to turn the Wi-Fi off on their NBN routers. We make sure there is plenty of security turned on and give the customer a password printout to keep – as well as keeping track of all username and password info for them in our secure customer database. Once setup these devices can cater for multiple users and multiple devices (such as smart TV’s with NetFlix) all browsing the Internet at the same time without any problems.

Besides transferring the normal documents, spreadsheets, photos, music and movies there are a heap of things that we often get across to the new PC for customers. These extra items include emails (sent and received), address books, Internet Favourites, Customised Dictionaries, CRM Databases, Point of Sale Systems and accounting packages such as MYOB & QuickBooks!
